There’s so much talk lately about the benefits of Turmeric as a superfood, but what is it and what does it actually do?

You might be surprised to know that it is actually one of the best healing foods you can eat and here’s why.

Firstly, what is turmeric and what makes it so powerful?

Turmeric is a spice that is traditionally used in curry recipes to give it flavour and that gorgeous golden yellow colour. But turmeric has also been used in traditional medicines for years because of its strong healing qualities.

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is known for its highly potent anti-inflammatory properties as well as being a powerful antimicrobial, antibacterial and antioxidant. Wow, that’s a lot of anti’s!

So why do you need turmeric in your life?
Powerful Antioxidant

Curcumin has massive antioxidant power cleansing the body of free radicals and helping the body’s own anti-oxidisation process kick in. It is thought that reducing free radical damage to the body helps prevent aging and many diseases. There’s incentive right there!

Effective Anti-inflammatory

It may surprise you, but inflammation in the body is not always a bad thing. It is actually the body’s way of protecting itself against harmful bacteria in the process of repairing itself. Where inflammation is bad though, is chronic or long term inflammation. This causes damage to the body and has been found to be one of the leading causes of many western diseases including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative conditions. High potency curcumin is a strong anti-inflammatory that targets inflammation at the molecular level, making it highly effective.

Treatment for Cancer

A lot of research is being done into the effectiveness of curcumin in the treatment and prevention of cancer. The properties in curcumin are growth inhibitors. Studies have shown cancerous cell growths, reduce in size or not develop at all when curcumin is absorbed in the body. Results on test animals have been very promising in reducing growths or preventing further spread, especially in digestive cancers.

Prevention of Alzheimer’s

Unfortunately there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia, but there is strong belief that curcumin can help prevent these diseases from forming. Curcumin can cross through the brain-blood barrier, meaning its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties come into play in the direct source where brain diseases begin. By reducing inflammation and the build up of protein in the brain, the risks of Alzheimer’s drops.

Treat Arthritis Conditions

Arthritis is a common disease affecting many millions throughout the world. Caused by inflammation of the joints, arthritis can be debilitating to those affected. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties once again come into play, alleviating the symptoms and pain for so many users. Many people have reported that taking curcumin supplements has helped their condition even more than their typical medications.

Help Combat Depression

You might be shocked to learn that curcumin has been used most recently in patients suffering depression with positive results. The reason for this is curcumin has been shown to increase the brains’ neurotransmitters therefore increasing the levels of serotonin and dopamine – two known factors in clinical depression. Studies are being carried out as we speak with regards to the clinical science of this which will hopefully benefit a lot of Australians. But, being a natural spice used everyday, there’s really no need to wait as we’ll show you below.

It is important to note, that the more potent the curcumin supplement, the more powerful it will be. It has also been proven that curcumin needs to be taken with an absorption enhancer (like black pepper) to be fully effective. Luckily our very own Golden Gut has that covered!

So if cancer fighting, arthritis attacking, gut healing, Alzheimer’s deterring qualities aren’t quite enough to convince you to consume more turmeric, I have a feeling these mouth-watering curries and yummy drinks might just do the trick:
